Roswell creates history: Becomes the first US city to establish a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve

In a historic move, the city of Roswell, New Mexico, became the first city in the US to officially launch the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. Currently, the reserve holds $3,000 Bitcoin (BTC) in donations and aims for $1 million in the future. The Bitcoin reserve started with a donation of $2,906 worth of 0.0305 BTC.

The adoption of the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve depicts a positive shift in Rowsell’s financial strategy, signaling cryptocurrencies as a legal asset for public reserves.

Guy Malone, a certified Bitcoin Professional and Bitcoin Columnist at the Roswell Daily Record news, is also involved in the Bitcoin Reserve launch. He shared a photo of the receipt named “The Roswell Strategic Reserve and Bitcoin Emergency Fund” on X and specified that he signed it with Juliana Halvorson, Mayor Pro Tem of Roswell.

A few days ago, Arizona’s legislature blinked yes to the first-ever US Bitcoin Reserve, allowing the state to invest up to 10% of public funds in digital assets, including Bitcoin. Another related news that unfolded recently was about the plans of the mayor of Panama City, Mayer Mizrachi, to establish a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. Earlier, the Mayor announced that the country would accept cryptocurrency payments for municipal fees and taxes.

What is a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve?

In simple words, a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve is a reserve asset where governments, corporations, or institutions store and manage Bitcoins and other altcoins. The sole purpose of the reserve is to ensure financial security and stability, protection against inflation, and expand the investment portfolio.

In his move to make the US the “crypto capital of the world”, President Donald Trump introduced the idea of the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve through an executive, in March 2025. His strategic reserve would include Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Ripple (XRP), Cardano (ADA), and Solana (SOL).

How does the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve affect the crypto market?

Typically, when a country, state, or big institution introduces a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, bullish sentiment arises in the market, particularly in the Bitcoin market. This happens due to the states’ confidence in the crypto market, triggering a buying pressure. This can often lead to a price hike in BTC and an increase in its market volume. Moreover, accepting Bitcoin as a reserve asset will increase the credibility of the coin among investors.

Several reports showed that the price of BTC surged by 3.2% in the first hour following the news, with an 18% spike in trading volume.  At the time of reporting, BTC is hovering around $95,077.9.
