Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin company will now accept crypto payments for space flights. In the backdrop of cryptocurrency being used as payment in different sectors, Blue Origin, a space exploration company owned by Bezos, will accept major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana for space flights. This initiative was made possible through a collaboration with payments company Shift4, whose infrastructure enables crypto purchases, including those made with popular stablecoins like USDT and USDC.
“Our mission has always been to revolutionize commerce by simplifying the transaction process, and we’re thrilled to now extend that vision beyond Earth,” said Taylor Lauber, CEO of Shift4. “Together with Blue Origin, we are making space accessible to explorers around the globe. This partnership will enable adventurous travelers to book the adventure of a lifetime, no matter their preferred payment method—all with a simple, frictionless experience.”
An interesting fact about Blue Origin is that around 75 humans have already boarded the New Shepard spacecraft to go past the Kármán Line, the internationally recognized boundary into space. Although the exact cost of the flight is not available, Blue Origin requires at least a $150,000 deposit. According to prominent media, “the firm [Blue Origin] auctioned off the first-ever seat on its New Shepard spacecraft in 2021, securing a winning bid of $28 million from crypto billionaire and Tron founder Justin Sun.”
