Election campaigns in some regions are deeply rooted in promoting the pro-crypto policies alongside other promises. That’s what the trends in the US and South Korean presidential campaigns show, and it has marked a victory, although crypto-friendly promises are not the sole reason for the win.
Now, New York City has a newly elected mayor, Zohran Mamdani, and the crypto market has steeply nosedived! The 34-year-old Democrat is not vocal about pro-crypto ideas, and that has triggered the crypto community. Unlike the former Mayor Andrew Cuomo, who is a pro-crypto leader, Mamdani is highly concerned about the impacts that would happen if crypto dominates. In other words, his stance on crypto is unclear.
Why is Zohran Mamdani not promoting crypto?
In 2023, Mamdani said rich people are not affected when crypto companies fall. The crash mostly affects small investors with low income and community colors.
In fact, Mamdani indeed directs attention toward people in the lower communities; however, his crypto grudge is something that is being discussed among crypto enthusiasts in the country.
The newly elected mayor also has a clear stance on crypto regulations. After the collapse of Sam Bankman-Fried’s FTX exchange in 2022, New York Attorney General Letitia James called for stricter consumer protections in the stablecoin realm. Mamdani, who was a member of the New York City Assembly at that time, supported the Attorney’s call. Building on that, Mamdani has raised his voice in support of low-income investors.
Supporting this fact comes his clear opinion in an interview: “I don’t think we should have billionaires”, because, for him, so much money flowing in is a moment of inequality. Meanwhile, he said that he is looking forward to working with everyone, including billionaires, “to make a city that is fairer for all of them.”
An assembly bill that bans crypto mining
A New York State bill — Assembly Bill A7389C — introduced in 2021, aims to have a moratorium (temporary ban) on Proof-of-Work (PoW) crypto mining operations that use their own energy sources. And, Zohran Mamdani, is one of the leaders who introduced this bill, citing out impact of mining on the environment. This emphasizes his concern for the environment and climate.
What will Zohran Mamdani’s rule look like for the crypto community?
Although Madani has not strongly agreed or disagreed with crypto, his previous statements denote a non-friendly stance toward the sector. Moreover, most of the crypto communities are worried about what crypto will look like under his rule.
If he enforces or works for stricter regulations, two outcomes are high: fraudulent or fake activities in the crypto space will be exposed, if any, or the Trump administration, which aims to make America the crypto capital, may knock down his policies. As the country strives to become more crypto-friendly, Mamadani’s anti-crypto stance may face significant challenges.
