OpenAI’s popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, alongside its APIs and the Sora video generation service, experienced a significant global outage on Tuesday, leaving thousands of users unable to access the platforms across multiple continents. India and the United States reported the highest number of disruptions.
According to the real-time monitoring platform Downdetector, user reports of ChatGPT outages surged rapidly around 3 p.m. local time, with approximately 800 complaints logged in India alone. OpenAI confirmed the widespread issues on its status website, indicating that the problems began around 3 a.m. EST, affecting services for at least three hours.
“Some users are experiencing elevated error rates and latency across the listed services. We are continuing to investigate the issue,” the company stated on its status page.
The only OpenAI service reported to be currently functional is its Playground, which allows users to experiment with and finely tune AI models. The widespread disruption highlights the growing reliance on OpenAI’s services for various applications and operations worldwide.
OpenAI has not yet provided a cause for the outage, but investigations are ongoing. Users are advised to monitor the company’s official status page for further updates on the resolution of the issue.
