Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing arm of Amazon, suffered a major outage on Monday, causing widespread connectivity issues and disrupting several popular websites and apps around the world — including Fortnite, Snapchat, and Coinbase.
“We can confirm increased error rates and latencies for multiple AWS services in the US-EAST-1 Region,” AWS said in a statement on its status page.
AI startup Perplexity, crypto exchange Coinbase, and trading app Robinhood all attributed the disruptions to AWS. “Perplexity is down right now. The root cause is an AWS issue. We’re working on resolving it,” Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas posted on X.
The outage affected a wide range of platforms that rely on AWS’s cloud infrastructure, which provides computing power, data storage, and digital services to companies, governments, and individuals. Disruptions of this scale often ripple across the internet, impacting major online services.
According to outage tracking site Downdetector, Amazon’s own services — including its shopping site, Prime Video, and Alexa — also faced technical problems. Gaming platforms like Fortnite, Roblox, Clash Royale, and Clash of Clans were hit as well.
Financial apps such as Venmo and Chime reported service interruptions, while ride-hailing platform Lyft and messaging app Signal also experienced downtime.
AWS, which competes with Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, has not yet commented publicly on the cause or timeline for resolving the issue.
