This age of digital technology is standing at its peak with more innovation unfolding in the near future. AI is now easily available to everyone, and internet communities are even creating fake content. While this is nothing new, the Cybersecurity Council of the UAE has warned users to be cautious of “deepfake” video and audio clips that use AI to create deceptive content.
UAE’s deepfake alert comes amid growing incidents
Several malicious actors are using deepfake technology to spread false information, conduct scams, and impersonate officials. In 2024, a survey conducted by Regula, an identity verification platform, shows that 49% of businesses were hit by audio and video scams.
Another study found that 74.3% of people are highly concerned about deepfakes manipulating their opinion on the internet.
In this growing concern, the Cybersecurity Council’s alert asks the public to stay vigilant against deceitful video and audio clips.
Be careful before you share content
Internet users are very absorbed by Instagram reels, YouTube shorts, and other social media content. Wow! This content looks funny, it looks genuine! And, within seconds, you click to share it without verifying the truth — you are inviting trouble! The council is asking the public to take extra care when consuming and sharing virtual content and to stop reposting unauthentic or doubtful content.
Besides protecting the public from such nuisances, the council also aims to prevent false content that tarnishes the image of the country, leadership, or official institutions.
Penalty for spreading falsehoods
If you think sharing false content on the internet is a minor issue to worry about, you’ve gone wrong there! The Federal Decree-Law No. (34) of 2021 on Countering Rumors and Cybercrimes is here to actively monitor online activities. Strict penalties will be imposed on perpetrators who violate the provisions.
