After a recent social engineering attack on the blockchain platform TRON DAO, the victims reportedly experienced around $45,000 fund loss. The hackers obtained the solicited funds from an illegitimate address shared on TRON’s compromised X account.
A crypto news platform reached out to the TRON team asking about the hack. The team responded, confirming that the hacker obtained approximately $45,000 through the illicit contract address posted on the platform’s compromised account. When asked about any possible connection between the TRON X account hack and the recent New York Post’s X account hack, a TRON representative said that the investigation is still underway, and any definitive link between the two hacks cannot be confirmed at this time.
On May 3, the TRON developers posted on X that one of their team members was targeted in a “malicious social engineering attack” on May 2, which led to users receiving contract addresses and direct messages in the name of TRON. The team identified that these messages were not initiated by them and confirmed their account was hacked.
Following this incident, TRON wrote that they were investigating the hack.
The X post also read that even after the perpetrator was logged out and TRON regained access, the hacker continued contacting the users and offering posts from the platform’s main account in exchange for payment.
A similar incident happened on May 5, when decentralized exchange Curve Finance suffered an X account scam. The hackers operated under the guise of the true Curve Finance account and posted about a fake promotion for Curve Finance’s CRV airdrop.
Michael Egorov, founder of Curve Finance, confirmed the hack through an X post. However, a few hours later, the Curve Finance team informed the audience that the platform was back to normal.
Hacks and scams have become ubiquitous in the crypto industry, with billions of dollars illegally stolen from several companies. In the past few years, X accounts of Compound Finance, CoinGecko, Blockchain Capital, and even Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin have been illegally taken over by hackers.
