Abu Dhabi builds tomorrow: Inside the world’s first AI-native city

Aion Sentia is a new city being built in Abu Dhabi, UAE. It will change the way people live in cities.

The goal is for Aion Sentia to be the first city in the world to use AI to think.    This is a lot more than just a “smart city.”  It will show how AI can be helpful in the real world.

The project has a huge budget of $3.3 billion and is supposed to be done by 2027.  Its goal is to turn the emirate into a global centre for AI and environmentally friendly urban innovation.

Ahmed Hisham Al Kuttab, who is in charge of the Department of Government Enablement in Abu Dhabi, told the media, “The Abu Dhabi Government Digital Strategy 2025–2027 reflects our leadership’s vision of being an AI-native government—seamlessly integrating AI across all systems for a future that is proactive, agile, and fully technology-enabled.”      In Aion Sentia, AI is a normal part of life, not just a piece of technology.  This is the idea that the city is built on.

Imagine a city where everything is run by smart systems. For example, cars that drive themselves, healthcare that can predict what will happen, infrastructure that uses less energy, and a government that uses AI.   Aion Sentia says it will give us a complete model that will make every part of city life more efficient, sustainable, and new.

5,000 jobs

Aion Sentia does more than just improve technology. By 2027, the project is expected to add more than AED 24 billion (about $6.5 billion) to Abu Dhabi’s GDP.

It will also create more than 5,000 new jobs in fields that are growing quickly, like data analytics, cybersecurity, robotics, and AI ethics.

This project not only helps the UAE reach its Emiratisation goals, but it also helps build a highly skilled tech workforce.  This makes Abu Dhabi an even better leader in the world when it comes to new ideas.

This brave plan is all about forming strategic partnerships. Aion Sentia works with some of the best colleges, such as G42, the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), and the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI).

People from a lot of different countries worked on the project.   Bold Technologies, which is based in Abu Dhabi, and My Aion Inc., an Italian AI company, made it happen with a $2.5 billion Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) deal.

Aion Sentia is not like other smart cities because it has cognitive abilities.      Daniele Marinelli, the CEO of My Aion Inc., the Italian company that came up with the idea, said, “This city will not only be smart, but it will also be cognitive—learning and evolving with its residents.”

Aion Sentia will not only collect data, but it will also look at it and act on it, always changing to meet the needs of its users.

Imagine a city that knows what you need, takes care of its own roads and buildings, and uses energy in the best way possible.   People who lived there would always be learning and getting better.

MAIA is the city’s brain. It is an app that uses AI

MAIA uses one simple interface to do a lot of different services, like public transportation, smart home controls, healthcare, and personalised recommendations.

Depending on how you use it, MAIA changes how you work with it. You can tell your phone to plan your anniversary dinner. MAIA will not only make the appointment, but also arrange for your ride and change the temperature in your home when you get back, all with just one request.

Another government official said, “Abu Dhabi’s AI-native city vision is not just a regional milestone; it’s a global inflection point.”   The UAE’s capital is changing the way cities work, economies grow, and people live in cities.

Aion Sentia is a model for how cities will look and work in the future, with new standards for smart design, efficiency, and sustainability.

Aion Sentia’s leap into the future is a big step forward for AI-powered city planning and management in general and Abu Dhabi in particular. Cities will not only respond in the future; they will also think.
