Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an inevitable part of the growth of every country. By keeping technology as a key growth factor, the White House has launched the Genesis Mission, an AI project led by the US Department of Energy (DOE) to ‘build an integrated AI platform.’
Yesterday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Genesis Mission, positioning it as ‘the largest marshaling of federal scientific resources since the Apollo era.’
So, what is the Genesis Mission?
With Genesis Mission, the energy department of the US aims to build an AI platform on US federal scientific data and supercomputers. The mission is all about using AI in the science and technology sector of the country.
The DOE has heavy responsibilities to create and integrate AI infrastructure using supercomputers and federal databases. This AI-integrated platform/infrastructure will train scientific foundation models and operate AI agents in biotech, semiconductors, and other scientific fields.
In simpler terms, in the future, you will see trained AI models, agents, and robotic labs operating key fields such as biotechnology, energy (nuclear fusion), quantum science, space, and semiconductors.
The goal of this initiative is simple: double the productivity of the US science and technology using AI.
For the integrated AI infrastructure, the Department of Energy will unite its 17 national laboratories and private firms, and universities to accelerate scientific operations and technological innovation.
The US has a great history of technology, as stated by U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright. From the Manhattan Project that created the first atomic bomb to the Apollo mission that landed humans on the Moon, the brightest minds and industries of the US have answered the call when their nation needed them, said the Secretary. “Today, the United States is calling on them once again.”
AI integration will lead to high energy consumption
AI technology is already consuming a lot of energy. As you know, every answer that ChatGPT provides you costs some amount of energy. The Genesis Mission includes building an ambitious super AI platform to speed up scientific discoveries. While this mission is appreciable, several observers say that it will consume a high amount of electricity, and the cost may also rise.
However, as the electricity demand grows, more efficient systems like large grids will become available, which will eventually reduce the cost of electricity; this is what the government claims. Moreover, with top-notch technology available, the US may design an energy consumption structure that would help infrastructures to use less energy.
